Kitchen Makeover – an 80’s kitchen goes from drab to fab

I wanted to share this kitchen makeover because who doesn’t like a before and after, right?! This is a kitchen I completed a couple of years ago and it was in dire need of a facelift. The oak cabinets from the 80’s had their time and were more than ready to be replaced.

This was a gut job! Everything, apart from the floor tiles which had recently been updated, were removed.

The concept for this kitchen was traditional luxe. Brass, marble, corbels, and ornate moldings were at the top of the list to lend to the traditional luxe feel.

We discussed cream cabinets from the beginning and upon finding the beautiful french blue range we decided to add that same blue to the island. The range was a tough sale at first due to the risky colour since the typical colours are stainless, white or black. But this range makes the kitchen! And I know they couldn’t be happier with it.

No detail was overlooked in this traditional kitchen makeover, from the layout, to the hardware, to the gold leafing on the island. Careful attention was placed on the layout of the kitchen to ensure all the storage needs were met.

Thanks to the cream and white colour palette the room appears much brighter than before. Bringing the cabinets all the way to ceiling not only increases storage but also makes the 8 foot ceiling height appear larger.

What traditional kitchen would be complete with out marble countertops? This particular marble is called Calacatta marble, the veins are warm grey as opposed to the cool grey seen in carrara marble. It was the perfect compliment to all the other materials in the kitchen.

If you are dreaming of a kitchen makeover this year there are a few things to consider

Know your budget

Before you start anything, know how much you want to spend. Be realistic with the number and decide where you want to save and splurge. If you love to cook, perhaps you should splurge on the appliances.

Have a style concept

Have a concept for your kitchen and make sure it will flow with the rest of your house. Because you wouldn’t want a traditional kitchen if the rest of your house is contemporary.

Plan your storage

People often overlook this part and just place drawers and doors and as a result they don’t have the proper storage. If you plan ahead you can rest assured that you’ll have a place for all of your kitchen belongings. There are also many solutions that can be built in to increase the storage efficiency. For example a drawer with a built in knife block, a built in recycling station and cookie tray dividers to name a few.

Space Plan

It is SO important to space plan! You need to space plan to make sure everything will fit! You can use graph paper and do a quick sketch to ensure this! If you are planning to have an island you need to be sure that there is enough room around it and you wouldn’t want to buy a kitchen table bring it home and it doesn’t fit!

How will you use the kitchen? Do you entertain a lot? Knowing your lifestyle and what kind of cook you are will determine what you need in appliances, what type of materials you should use and most of all how to layout the overall kitchen.

It seems to be that everyone always ends up in the kitchen so let it be a space that reflects you and the way you live.
